Last month I only had one concert, as January is always a slow month for me in regards to my ministry schedule. So I took advantage of that and headed to Charleston to hear Hannah lead worship, Clayton run sound, and spend the day visiting with them over lunch and then in their home with my beloved grand dogs. As we were standing in their kitchen, Hannah proudly showed me her succulent that had literally grown as tall as the top of the window over the sink. Not having any semblance of a green thumb in my body, I was impressed with my daughter's mad gardening skills.
And then I noticed what I have seen every time I am in her home: post-its. With Scriptures written on them. They are scattered across the kitchen sink window. They are in the hall bathroom, in the master bathroom, on their mirrors, and all over the house in visible spots. I couldn't help but think to myself, "Like mother like daughter." If you come to my home, you will see the same thing. I need the Truth of God's Word in clear view to remind me when life screams anything but the truth at me.
Deuteronomy 6:5-9 says, "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your head. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
Friends, the only way we can walk worthy of the call God has placed on our lives is to fill our minds with His Word. The world is loud. It is unkind, cruel, and relentless. There is an enemy roaring around seeking whom he may devour. Whatever has our focus will determine our direction.
"Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things." (Philippians 4:8)
May I say it again, whatever has our focus will ultimately determine our direction. By my kitchen sink, right next to my Keurig where I go first thing in the morning, I have a daily Scripture flip calendar. The same one I have used for years. It's got a few water and coffee stains. Before I fix my coffee, I flip it over to see what the Scripture will be for that day. And all throughout the day, I look at that verse, meditating on it, saying it over and over in my mind as I go about my day. It is the Good News. And I don't know about you, but I can't get enough Good News right now in the midst of all that flashes across my TV, computer and phone screens. I challenge you to be in the Word on a daily basis. Even try mine and Hannah's habit of putting some post-its up in conspicuous places. The Word of God will not return void.
"So is my Word that goes our from my mouth; it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11)
I am deeply grateful for the men and women that faithfully serve as my Jordan Ministries Board of Directors. We had our annual meeting here in my home this month, and I cannot thank them enough for their support, wise counsel, accountability, prayers and friendship. Thank you, Bob Debenport, Rev. Brad Bird, Melissa Bird and Sharon Cone. I could not do what the Lord has called me to without you. That evening I joined the Bird family at one of our favorite restaurants. After dinner we headed up to Big Lots in the same shopping center, and while the others shopped, Melissa and I found a comfy place to continue our visit.
Ministry at a Glance The month of January is typically light on ministry events, and this year was no exception. I only had one event this past month, but what a joy it was. Thank you to West Columbia First Church of the Nazarene in West Columbia, SC for allowing me to share my ministry in your morning service.
As we told you last month, my family's story will be featured on an upcoming episode of "The Fuhrman Diaries," slated to air in March of 2019. The program is part of the subscription-based streaming platform Fox Nation. The show features LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman as he analyzes cases from his perspective. Once we have a specific air date we will be sure to pass it along to you. The crew came last week for interviews and filming, and Zoey thoroughly enjoyed having the camera crew here, jumping into my chair just as it was time for the interview to begin. She is always in the very center of it all.
Coming up on Thursday, February 21st I will be speaking at the Carolinas Hospital Systems Healthy Women Event and I would love for you to join me there. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. and you must purchase tickets in advance.
Funnies from the Road That time you pull out the black sheet you use for your product table when the hosting church doesn't have a table cloth, and a pair of undies falls out onto the floor in front of two gentlemen sitting in the lobby where you are setting up. Yep. Really happened. Thank goodness they were clean. #truestory #neveradullmoment
When your hairdresser tells you (after seeing you on the last national television program on which you appeared) to be sure to have her do your hair next time, you send her a picture BEFORE the camera crew arrives just to be sure she approves this time. Thanks, Chelsea Calvert, for always caring enough to be honest and make sure I look my best!
On the Homefront
Oh how I enjoyed getting to hear my Hannah do such a beautiful job leading worship at Newspring Church in Charleston on the 13th. I have posted a video of her singing one of the songs, "Holy Ground" on my Facebook pages and would love to invite you to head over there to be blessed.
What a precious morning I spent with these two special friends last Saturday, Martha Vansant and Yvonne Howard. Rarely do I have the privilege of sitting in the audience. What a powerful message Yvonne shared with us through her incredible story, beautiful voice, Scripture, and of course, humor. After a decade of “silence,” as she buried her beloved mother and faithfully cared for her dementia-plagued daddy, I always believed the Lord was not done with her speaking/singing ministry. Women's Ministry leaders, I highly recommend you invite her to your church.
I am back in full swing teaching my delightful 28 piano/voice students here at home every Monday-Wednesday, and Sammy the singing dog is settling in nicely, and actually seems to be enjoying the extra attention he gets. He especially enjoyed when my "Darla Momma" came with Lauren Cone (Sharon's mom, Lauren's grandmother.)
