During the month of February, I sang at several Valentines Banquets, and shared concerts centered around the theme of God's love for us. I found myself thinking about the fact that, though I did not necessarily have a "valentine," I am deeply blessed. So I began counting the blessings of those that I love, and that love me back. The Scripture in Ecclesiastes 4reminded me of so many that walk beside me in life. I'm especially grateful for Allison Hodge, my Ministry Administrative Assistant. She has taken on so much of the slack in running this ministry, and I thank God for her. I could not do what the Lord has called me to do without her. Yes, two are better than one.
I'm grateful for the blessing of my Aunt Sue, who is also one of my dearest friends. She a widow, and I now single again for over 18 years, and we encourage one another daily in life, whether it be the diet that we are currently on, or seeking to be more like Jesus to those He has entrusted us to love. And man do we laugh! She does my soul good. A few months ago, she had offered to give Hannah a bridal shower and invited her sister my other Aunt Barbara, to join her. They hosted Hannah's shower this past weekend, and having two great aunts blessing my daughter meant so much to me. And then two of my cousins, Kelly and Susan, came from Atlanta and Greenville all the way to Columbia to help their mom (Aunt Sue) throw the beautiful shower for my precious bride-to-be. Having someone to share the load always makes it so much easier to carry, and so much more fun.
I am grateful for the blessings my 2 children are to me. Hannah who is nearby in Clemson and I get to enjoy more often, and Ross who is far away in Denver, CO who I stay connected via iPhone technology like Face-timing. I thank God for both of them, and so glad He gave me two children to love. My friend Yvonne, who prints my ministry schedule out and hangs it by her desk where she works, so she can remember to pray for me each and every place I minister. As she is one who served in a very fruitful speaking/singing ministry for years, she understands firsthand all that is involved, and she prays. As she now works from home, so she can care for her elderly and ill father, she makes such a difference in my life. And though she no longer travels in ministry, oh how she ministers...to her father, where there is never applause, at least this side of heaven. She ministers to countless pastors each week with her texts. And to me, faithfully sharing specific words of encouragement, or Scriptures, the morning before I am to minister. I know that I do not ever walk into a ministry commitment alone, because my sister in Christ is going there before me and with me in prayer. I'm grateful for my brother Robert who is also my precious friend. My best girlfriends, who daily encourage me in this walk of life, and as I seek to do the same...Sharon, who lives in town and we communicate daily whether by text or phone, get together when we can, share in the wedding plans of daughters getting married just a week apart, and who is committed to praying daily with me over my beloveds and my ministry, who also serves on my ministry board. Yvette, who lives in Kentucky, and yet we stay connected by text, Facebook and regular phone calls that always include bursts of uncontrollable laughter. Julie, my college roommate and friend for over 30+ years now, whom my children call "Aunt Julie" and hers call me "Aunt Dawn," as we have shared a lot of life together. There's Beth, who prays for my children and me. Melissa who also has been a friend for years and serves on my ministry board, Melodie a fellow singer/speaker chick who is always a breath of fresh air even when her plate is overflowing to capacity between being a wife, mom to 3 children, one who is special needs, as well as multiple foster children. My sister-in-law Caroline, who has blessed me with the joy of being an aunt to her 2 little ones and remaining her "big sister" despite divorce. Family, Friends. These are just the tip of the iceberg. We cannot do life alone. God's Word is so accurate and true.
As one of my Miss SC sisters, Sherry Bradshaw's son was in the hospital all last week with a very serious staph infection, she posted on Facebook the need for prayer, and countless people prayed. We all joined together lifting them up. I was able to stop by the hospital to see and pray with her sweet son, simply as I was downtown one morning for an appointment across the street from the hospital. Later that day she posted a precious Facebook message to me sharing how much it had meant to her to take time out of my schedule to do so. It didn't seem like much to me, but to her, it meant the world.
So today, my challenge to you is this: you are somebody else's plus 1. 1 + 1 = 2. And God says 2 are better than 1. So pray and ask Him how you can be the best 1 He has called you to be, to share His love to those He has entrusted into your life. I am thanking Him also for you. Thank you for taking the time to let me come into your home and life, share a word of encouragement to you along the way. Thank you for your time in reading these monthly emails, and praying for me, my family, and the places and people I minister to as you do.
1 Samuel23:16talks of how Jonathan went to David and "helped him find strength in God." Oh may we not only have, but be friends of this kind. That is the Father's plan. Two are truly better than one. And remember, as we celebrate Easter, ResurrectionSunday, that God loved you so much, that He gave His only Son for you, and you are not alone.
On the Home Front:
February was a busy month between concerts and trips to the upstate for me personally. I was able to travel to Newspring Church Powdersville, SC's campus to worship with Hannah and Clayton the firstSundayof the month as Hannah was a part of the worship team there, and take them to a sushi lunch afterward.
Thatnext TuesdayI was back on the road to Greenville where I met Hannah for her 2nd dress fitting, then lunch. I enjoyed a "date" with one of my favorite sweethearts, my nephew Birkes, as he came over to play. Then it was back to Greenville for Hannah's wedding dress fitting #3, and the 3rd time was a charm! It fit perfectly and she got to take it as her very own!
The last Saturday of the month both of my Aunts Sue and Barbara, along with my cousins Susan and Kelly, hosted a beautiful bridal shower here in town, and it was such a special day celebrating Hannah and Clayton's wedding in just 2 shortmonths with family and friends. Everyone there enjoyed getting to "see" Ross via face time, as we all caught up with him and all that is going on in his life in Colorado.
It was a blast at Newspring Church Columbia's Block Party, where I joined friends and got tohear my voice student, Laurel MacCallum sing as a part of the worship team. It was great to run into one of Ross's best high school friends, Devon Chatman, home from college for the weekend. The highlight of the month was having Hannah, Blue and Clayton home for the last weekend, and Hannah and Blue staying until this past Tuesday. A trip out west during winter did not happen as I had hoped, so I am looking at a potential summer trip to Denver, where I understand from my former assistant Jennifer that July and August are breathtakingly beautiful and her favorite season of all there. This month my sister-in-law Elizabeth was baptized, and my brother Robert sent me a picture of this wonderful addition to her testimony. I am so thankful to be a part of this important step in her walk with the Lord. My assistant, Allison, and I were able to get in a much needed "staff meeting" that included her 2 little girls. And of course Chick-fil-A wasthe perfect place...good food and a playground. We remembered to take a picture after the girls were loaded up so we squished together in her van for a picture of our first official staff meeting. So that about sums up February around here, and as we head into March, Hannah will be back home a few more days, my sister-in-law Elizabeth will celebrate another birthday, and I will be "on the road" every single weekend but one in ministry! Your prayers for strength, health, and endurance are greatly appreciated! What's new over your way?
Ministry at a Glance:
February was a month full of love and ministry in my home state! I had several ministry opportunities, all in the great state of South Carolina, home sweet home!
On Saturday February 6th I shared with the Senior Adults at Second Baptist Church in Lancaster, SC. I had a wonderful time being a part of their Valentine’s Banquet.
I then traveled to Darlington, SC to share the love of Jesus at First Baptist Church for their Young at Heart Luncheon. Valentine’s DayI was blessed to celebrate at New Calvary Baptist Church in Sumter, SC for their morning worship service, where my sweet friend Nancy Griffin and 2 of her friends joined me, then treated me to a delicious and fun lunch afterward. And just this pastSunday, I ministered at Mount Hermon Baptist Church in Pelion, SC. It was a wonderful time celebrating Baptist Women’s Day.
March is definitely going to be quite a busy month for me and the ministry. I have several events scheduled in North Carolina as well as a weekend writer’s conference in Spartanburg, SC, and a quick trip to NYC. Your prayers for strength, health, travel mercies, and endurance are greatly appreciated. In addition, would you join me in praying for each and every host, as we work together to minister to the needs of the people coming to each of these events? May we be obedient to Him as our plans mean nothing apart from His blessing and anointing. FridayandSaturday, March 11th-12thI will be leading worship at the Carolina Christian Writers Conference in Spartanburg, SC. You can view more information about the eventhere. The very next day, March 13th, I will be ministering at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Wilson, NC as their guest on Women’s Day for both the morning service at10:30 a.m.where I will be joining their worship team, as well as a special evening concert at6:00 p.m.The weekend ofMarch 19th and 20thI will be in the Durham, NC area.Saturday, the 19th, I will be at Bethel Christian Center (hosting for Research Triangle Park Community Church) for their women’s conference that day.Sundaymorning I will be at Research Triangle Park Community Church at10:30 a.m.On Tuesdayevening,March 22nd, I am delighted to be with First Baptist Church in Gaffney, SC for their Ladies’ Night Out. On March 24th-25thI will be flying to New York City, NY to film an episode featuring my story on a new and upcoming television program on ABC entitled “I, Witness.” I would covet everyone's prayers as I re-visit many details of my family's story that I have not thought of since being on "On the Case With Paula Zahn" a few years ago, and that most importantly, my faith in Jesus Christ would be evident to those working and watching. This is a huge opportunity to share the story the Father has entrusted me to live and tell on network television, and I do not take the privilege or platform lightly. We will let you know of the air date once we are given that information. So stay tuned! Then the very next day I will drive to New Bern, NC for a rehearsal with their choir and worship team for Easter Sunday, March 27th, where I will be at Temple Baptist Church for both the9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.worship services.
In addition to these ministry opportunities, I also teach 24 delightful private piano and voice students in my home everyMonday,Tuesday, andWednesday. Yes, the pace I will keep this month is a bit staggering, but one of my life Scriptures reminds me that "I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me." (Phil.4:13) A ministry like mine comes in seasons of very busy, and very slow. This is obviously the very busy season, and after 29 years of ministry, the Lord has always been faithful to enable me to do that which He has entrusted me to do. Thank you in advance for partnering with me in prayer as I seek daily to walk worthy of the calling the Father has placed on my life.
Funnies From the Road: Never a dull moment in this life of mine...while sitting in the "getting blood drawn" chair last Wednesday morning for routine tests, after of course fasting since dinner the night before, the patient beside me had recognized me, graciously complimenting me on a concert I had shared at her church years ago. From that moment on, she and all 3 nurses kept insisting that I sing for them. Now understand, I had already told my nurse that I am a BAD blood-drawing patient, they can never find a vein, and I faint faithfully. As the blood was flowing from my hand (the only place they COULD fine a vein, and might I add, one of the most painful places), they continued to stare at me. And wait. I had to finally insist that it was all I could do to keep breathing and not pass out! Singing, needles, and blood don't mix for this weak-kneed chick!
The Product Spotlight of the month is in honor of Easter, and our Risen Savior, Jesus. It includes the favorite song that celebrates the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, "You Are My King/Amazing Love." This is Dawn's praise and worship project, and you can't help but sing along with songs like "Heart of Worship," "Grace Flows Down," and others.
